Preparing for a Chilli Eating Competition

serious tips… with real-world honesty

So you’ve signed up for a chilli eating competition…

First of all — respect.
Second – what’s wrong with you? 😄
Whether you’re chasing bragging rights or just want to see how far you can push yourself, one thing is guaranteed:
It’s going to hurt.
But with a bit of preparation, you can at least delay the regret.

Weeks Before the Competition

Build Your Tolerance (Carefully)

Don’t go straight from zero to nuclear.

Start with:

  • Jalapeños

  • Cayenne

  • Habaneros

Work your way up.

Jumping straight into something like a Brown Moruga Scorpion is less “training” and more “self-inflicted trauma”.

Eat Before You Train

Empty stomach + superhot chilli = bad life decisions.

You want something in your stomach to soften the blow.

Learn Your Limits

Everyone thinks they’re tough… until the heat hits.

There’s always that one bloke who says:
👉 “Yeah I handle spice pretty well”

…and five minutes later he’s questioning every decision he’s ever made.

The Day of the Competition

Eat a Proper Meal First

Not a full buffet — just something solid.

You’re not preparing for a marathon… but you’re also not walking into this empty.

This is where you realise it wasn’t just a “fun little challenge

Don’t Rely on a Rescue Drink

Most chilli eating comps don’t give you anything to drink.
👉 No milk
👉 No yoghurt
👉 No safety net

You’re on your own. And even if they do offer water…
👉 it won’t help anyway.
Water just spreads the heat around your mouth like a bushfire.
So once you’re in:
👉 you’re committed.

Expect the Heat to Build

Superhot chillies don’t always hit instantly.

They creep in…

…and then suddenly you’re in a situation you can’t reverse.

Stay Calm

Panicking makes it worse.

Your body will:

  • sweat

  • shake

  • question your life choices

Just breathe and pretend you meant to be here.

The Burn Doesn’t End at Your Mouth

Capsaicin doesn’t just disappear.

It continues its journey…

👉 and you’ll be reminded of that later.

(You’ve been warned.)

Be Careful What You Touch

Capsaicin stays on your hands.

Do NOT:

  • touch your eyes

  • touch your face

  • touch anything you value

When things get out of hand

Recovery Tips

👉 Dairy helps

👉 Sugar can help a little

👉 Time is your only real solution

👉 There is no “quick fix” — only survival.

Some people try to bring the heat back up “Vomit” once it gets too much… but that’s not something you should not rely on or plan for.

If anything, it usually means things have gone too far.

Final Thoughts

Chilli eating competitions are part challenge, part stupidity, and part badge of honour.

With the right prep, you might actually enjoy it.

👉 Without it… you’ll still remember it. Just not fondly.
